Window Boxes

If you have been to the Mediterranean region, you are almost sure to have admired the colourful flower displays on the outside of houses. These displays, in which geraniums often predominate, usually feature hanging baskets and window boxes.

Floral window box

Flower window boxes are, of course, far more widespread than just the Mediterranean, but to many that region is the inspiration. Like other plant containers, though, window boxes can be very useful for those who have no garden to speak of. If you just have a tiny concrete yard, or no yard at all, such as in an apartment block, then using a window box can be a great boon.

Lion window box

Taking care of a window box can be very easy. Once planted with flowers, foliage or trailing plants, it is really just a matter of remembering to water, feed, trim and dead head flowers whenever needed. In hot weather, watering is likely to be daily at least, as window boxes tend to be shallow. You do need to be very careful about overwatering, so take note of what appears to be the optimal amount of water needed in each type of weather condition that the box will be exposed to.

French window box

There are a couple of other things you should bear in mind if you are planning to have window boxes. The most important is that it is secure and safe; especially if you plan to put it on a window sill 20 floors up in an apartment block. They really should be secured. Storms do happen, and high winds can shift even quite heavy objects such as a full window box. If you are just in a house and the obvious hazards not present, then your main concern is probably that the window box does not slide off and ruin your display, especially if it is on or under a ground floor window sill.

The other thing you need to be careful about is the possible stains, beneath the window box, caused by overwatering. So there is a double reason to get watering just right.

The window boxes illustrated are all made from either Fiberstone or fiberglass, which are a bit lighter than concrete, but very robust and long lasting; ideal for window boxes. Each is decorated differently, with (descending) floral, lion and French features on the outside front.
