Garden Pedestal and Column Decor
Pedestals and columns have been a medium for intricate stone carvings from early civilizations. Greek columns are perhaps the best known, but through the ages where there has been wealth and stone, that stone has been carved for the homes of the rich, and for buildings of state, to form majestic columns. The styles and designs of columns easily translate, on a much smaller scale, into decor for a modern large garden setting.
Garden columns nowadays are most likely to be made from moulds rather than genuine carvings, but the end result can look just as good. Also, modern materials and techniques have come into play. The pedestal on the left, a winged lion, is made from a fiberstone mix, reinforced with glass fibre, and then finished to give an aged, vintage look. This process leads to a pedestal that is less fragile than stone, and lighter to move around.
Pedestals make good bases in the garden for plant containers, bird baths or just another matching or complimenary garden ornament. The dancing muse pedestal on the left could have a variety of adornments on its top, or just be left as it is.
The classic column designs can also be used as garden decor, much in the same way as pedestals. They do need to be placed with care, as they could easily look out of place in a small modern garden. However, columns can be stylish and add a vertical dimension to areas of the garden that may be a bit flat.
